The majority of Butterfly Monitoring Schemes (BMS) have their own database to collect data and organize their own volunteers. These data are gathered into a central database each year by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UK CEH) in collaboration with BC Europe.
The European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (eBMS) provides a central online system for collecting butterfly monitoring data. This system is particularly beneficial for new schemes, as the website is not only a platform for collecting data, but assists with managing volunteers as well as providing useful information on butterfly monitoring.
The website together with the new ButterflyCount app facilitates the collection of butterfly data in the field with transects, fixed routes, and 15-min counts. Collecting butterfly data will help us understand their overall population trends and the status of each species in order to conserve them more effectively. The data are also used to calculate composite European Butterfly Indicators which can be used to assess trends in different habitats and help evaluate conservation efforts.
You can register a transect on the eBMS website and contribute to our knowledge of butterflies and to European butterfly indicators.
If there is a problem with the website, you can contact ebms@ceh.ac.uk.
We are part of a growing community of volunteers and professionals that record butterflies and help protect them.
