Together, we can help save butterflies and moths for future generations.

Your support is critical to ensure that Butterfly Conservation Europe can continue its work, saving butterflies, moths and their environment across Europe. We have a dedicated network of partners in over 35 countries who together co-ordinate the efforts of many thousands of volunteers. Help us to help them save these amazing creatures that are so fundamental to maintaining life on earth.

How your support helps us:

  1. Action for threatened species. The new Red List of European butterflies found that 65 species now face an imminent threat of extinction. Twenty-nine of these species are found nowhere else in the world and will be the focus of our attention in coming years. We do not want any more extinctions like the Madeiran Large White, Pieris wollastoni, which has not been seen since 1968. Funds are needed to conduct targeted surveys and work with local conservationists to ensure sites are protected and managed appropriately. Examples of previous surveys can be found here.
  2. Improving environmental policies. Environmental policies within the EU and Council for Europe are crucial to ensure that butterfly and moth habitats are conserved and properly managed. We work with the European Habitats Forum to improve policies across Europe and provide materials for use within the countries of Europe. See our Policy Pages.
  3. Monitoring and recording. In order to target conservation efforts, it is vital to know how each species is faring and where they live and breed. BC Europe established the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme in 2014 to coordinate data from across Europe. It now gathers data from nearly every European country and its technology and methods are being used across the world. Our world-leading ButterflyCount App makes it easy for recorders to document what they see and where, including 15-minute counts and moth recording options that use image recognition to aid identification.
  4. Education. Educating policy makers and the public is crucial to help make the case for conserving butterflies and moths. Not only do they bring us joy, they are crucial indicators of environmental health. We provide educational materials and share knowledge through our social media and website, as well as through our Network Partners in each country.
